Event Details
Train a model on every physics paper published before 1905 and it will never produce general relativity. It can extend what's known, cross-check it, and find patterns in it. The leap Einstein made isn't anywhere in the data. Daniel DeRepentigny, Senior PM at Spotify, calls this the 1905 problem, and he uses it to explain what today's LLMs are still genuinely bad at.
His framework splits product work into three kinds of thinking: inductive (finding the pattern in the data), deductive (following the rules to a conclusion), and abductive (the best available explanation for something nobody has seen before). Daniel's argument is that the tools have become very strong at the first two, the abductive leap is where they remain weak, and a large share of what senior PMs get paid for sits in exactly that space.
You'll spend most of the session applying it to your own job. Daniel walks through the framework, then we work as a group: sort your actual responsibilities into the three buckets, find the hours going to work the tools could already handle, and scope two or three tasks you can hand over when you get back to your desk.
What you'll take away
-
Your own week sorted into the three types of thinking, so you can see which parts are pattern work and which need judgment.
-
Two or three specific tasks, scoped in the room, that you can automate on Monday.
-
A read on which parts of your job get more valuable as the tools get better, and where to put your development time.
-
Language for the conversation with your manager about what you're automating and what stays with you.
-
The framework itself, which you can point at whatever tool ships next year.
Bring a notebook, you'll be using it!
